Last Tuesday tens of thousands demonstrated nationwide against Milei’s cuts to state university budgets. I studied at UNLP (Universidad Nacional de La Plata) and graduated in the 1970s. In those days, many young people from different provinces (“el interior”) moved to La Plata to study Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Psychology, Economics, Odontology, Physics, you name it. The city became an awesome melting pot of youngsters from all over, such an enriching experience for all of us. President Milei didn’t study at a state university. He could afford to do so at Universidad de Belgrano and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t realise the utmost importance of public education, a fundamental and transformative investment, not a cost. However, officials keep announcing further reductions in state education and health spending. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Adorni’s explanation of his exorbitant expenses, far exceeding his income. Sigh …
