“Enough of fuelling division and polarisation,” said Jorge García Cuerva, the archbishop of Buenos Aires at the ‘Te Deum’ ceremony on May 25 at the Metropolitan Cathedral. I wonder if President Milei realised García Cuerva was addressing him. As when he added: “What we lack is a leadership class willing to draw strength from those people and commit to dialogue and unity, doing so for those who can no longer cope, for those suffering from a lack of work, education and opportunities.” Will Milei turn a deaf ear to such requests? He’s clearly prone to denial, and chooses to feel attacked rather than stopping to assess whether there’s some truth in the criticism he receives daily. Is he aware of his sliding popularity? Is he seeking re-election in 2027? If so, he’d better start paying attention to the current growing social discontent. I hope the archbishop’s words work as a timely wake-up call, for everybody’s sake.
