Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is not being politically persecuted. She has been judged and convicted for fraudulent administration in the awarding of public works contracts in Santa Cruz Province. Moreover, she has also been permanently disqualified from holding public office. That’s it. We are all equal before the law, regardless of our status or background. What goes around, eventually comes around: the law of karma. She and her associates will have to return over 84 billion pesos, quite useful and timely if the stolen money goes to improving residents’ salaries, retirees’ pensions, scientific research, teacher training programmes, proper facilities for the disposal of sewage, provision of running water, and other basic needs. If the former president were responsible, she would advise her followers to avoid a violent response to the Supreme Court verdict. Nobody wants a civil revolt. Last Tuesday, some Kirchnerite activists broke into the ARTEAR building, vandalized the facilities, damaged several cars and bicycles, broke windows and forced their way into the channel. Those vehicles belong to the employees of the network. Are they responsible for CFK’s indictment? Why should they take the blame? Argentina has suffered too much violence already. It’s high time we turned over a new leaf and started respecting the law and our Constitution.
