In April 1982, the lunatic and drunkard General Galtieri, while our country was in the grip of a military dictatorship, started a crazy war between our country and the United Kingdom over the Malvinas Islands. Thousands of youngsters, with no training whatsoever and very poorly equipped, were irrationally sent there to their deaths. Those who managed to survive and come back after Argentina’s defeat, were ignored and even despised by our society. They got no psychological assistance or support, and many of them committed suicide. We’ve been ungrateful to those heroes, very much so. They deserve our eternal and unconditional respect. A brilliant and moving film comes to mind: Coming home (“Regreso sin Gloria”), directed by Francis Ford Coppola, about the impact and devastating effects of the war on the men who fought in Vietnam. We owe a lot to our Malvinas veterans – the return to democracy, among other things – and should bear them in mind, not just every April 2.
